When Distributors Start Acting Like Agencies
I recently spoke with Peter Gialantzis, COO of Pod Foods, about how they approach distribution for emerging brands.
One part of the conversation stood out: going beyond logistics.
Peter said they kept running into a problem — brands needed marketing and retail support to sell through, and without it, everyone’s margins suffered.
So they started adding capabilities you’d normally expect from a broker or agency:
- In-house design for packaging and shippers
- Influencer and content creation for digital ads
- Retail media support, like Instacart optimization
- Merchandising and in-store execution
Regardless of how big Pod is or how you feel about their model, the thinking is clear:
The closer you are to the point of sale, the more sense it makes to own the marketing that drives it.
That’s where I believe the biggest opportunity is — pairing infrastructure with marketing muscle so brands have a better shot at success, and partners have a bigger stake in their growth.
